When you hear the word sapphire, what do you visualize?  Most people instantly picture a deep, midnight blue gem—the kind you’ve seen sparkling in royal crowns, vintage engagement rings, or the jewelry box of someone with impeccable taste.

But here’s the delightful twist: sapphires actually come in every color of the rainbow… except red. Yes, you read that right. If you’re a September baby, you hit the gemstone jackpot. Your birthstone isn’t just one shade—it’s practically an entire crayon box of options.

Wait… Why No Red?

Think of sapphires and rubies as siblings in the same gem family. Both are made of the mineral corundum. But when corundum turns a rich, fiery red, it’s given a special title: ruby. Every other color—from blush pink to lemon yellow to mint green—goes by sapphire. Sapphires can even be totally colorless…this is known as white sapphire.

So technically, sapphires could be red… but then they’d just be called rubies. (It’s like how sparkling wine made in Champagne, France gets the fancy name champagne, while the rest of the bubbly has to go by prosecco or cava. Same family, different name.)

The Many Moods of Sapphire Colors

One of the reasons sapphires are so endlessly fascinating is that each color seems to carry its own personality. Here are just a few favorites:

  • Blue Sapphire – Classic, regal, and timeless. Think wisdom, loyalty, and truth.
  • Pink Sapphire – Romantic, playful, and full of heart. Associated with love, compassion, and joy.
  • Yellow Sapphire – Bright, sunny, and optimistic. Said to attract abundance and bring confidence.
  • Green Sapphire – Earthy, grounding, and restorative. A gem of renewal and harmony.
  • Purple Sapphire – Mysterious, creative, and inspiring. Perfect for the imaginative soul.
  • White (Colorless) Sapphire – Elegant and understated. Symbolic of clarity, honesty, and fresh beginnings.

Basically, sapphires are like your closet. Some days call for power-blue confidence, other days whisper soft pink romance, and occasionally you want to step out in a bold purple statement piece.

A Jewel With a Past (and Plenty of Glamour)

Sapphires aren’t just pretty—they’ve been prized for centuries. Ancient kings wore sapphires for protection. Clergy believed the blue varieties connected them to the heavens. And today, they’re still adored by collectors and celebrities alike. Who can forget Princess Diana’s famous sapphire engagement ring?

They’re also practical. On the Mohs scale of hardness, sapphires rank a 9 out of 10—second only to diamonds which are a 10! Translation: they can handle daily wear without losing their sparkle. A gemstone with brains and beauty.

September Birthdays, You’re Spoiled for Choice

Most months get one stone, maybe two if they’re lucky. September? You get a whole rainbow. Whether you’re drawn to the calming ocean depths of a blue sapphire, the cheerful glow of yellow, or the rare mystique of a purple, you can choose the shade that feels like you.

And the best part? You don’t have to wait for someone else to gift it to you (although that’s always lovely). Treat yourself. After all, what better way to celebrate your birth month than with a stone which reflects your own energy and style.
