I was just having a great conversation over a walk and lunch with my dear friend Sharyn and were remarking how easy and fun our conversations are on the beautiful, meaningful, and challenging parts of life.
We realized how much wisdom we have gained from our experiences and how it might be fun to start a podcast to share our conversations and insights with a community of women who want to keep growing and thriving at any stage in life like we do. The words “grace and grit” were revealed to me, and I thought this might be a good topic this month for my “Wisdom Corner”.
Maintaining grace & grit in life is about finding the balance between strength and softness — between perseverance and poise. It’s not easy, but it is possible with the right intentions and mindset. You don’t have to choose between being soft or strong — you can be both.
Grit is what keeps you going, and grace is what keeps you grounded. Life demands both, just in different moments. Grit gives you tenacity and grace gives you an aura of self-confidence to keep you looking, speaking, and acting with a sense of elegance.
Here are some thoughts and practices on how to have both grace & grit:
On Grace:
- Respond instead of react. Take a breath. Walk away if you need to. Grace is having power but choosing not to use it in destructive ways.
- Set boundaries — kindly. You can be compassionate and still say “no.” Grace doesn’t mean you let people walk all over you.
- Let go of bitterness. Holding grudges is heavy. Grace is about releasing what you can’t control and protecting your peace.
- Don’t lose yourself. Even when people disappoint you, choose to stay true to who you are.
On Grit:
- Keep showing up and don’t quit. Even when you’re tired, even when it sucks. Grit isn’t loud or dramatic — sometimes it’s just getting out of bed and trying again. Perseverance is key.
- Know why you’re doing it. When you have a bigger purpose or a clear “why,” it’s easier to push through the hard stuff.
- Be okay with discomfort. Growth always comes with resistance. You’re not weak for struggling — you’re strong for continuing. Sometimes in the struggles we gain the most wisdom and growth.
- Talk to yourself like someone you love. Honor yourself first and foremost. Treat yourself as kindly as you would your most cherished friend.
And the Balance?
- It’s not about being perfect — it’s about being real.
- Grit is how you keep moving. Grace is how you move through.
- Fight for what matters, but don’t let it harden your heart
I’d remind you: you’re allowed to be soft and strong. You’re allowed to cry and keep going. You’re allowed to stand your ground and still be kind.
That’s not weakness. That’s power — the quiet kind…the graceful kind (with a hint of grit)!
